What prompted you to start taking CBD?
I started using it a while ago, perhaps about a year, mostly so that I could see and feel for myself what it can do. I didn’t notice anything for a while, so I figured I didn’t really have anything currently going on that it had any noticeable effect on. And then my amazing wife suggested I see what it does with my depression.
About 4 or 5 years ago I began experiencing, for the first time, some cycles of what most people refer to as depression. Every couple of weeks or once a month or so, I would get hit with this really different reality where I feel less like myself and more like, well, someone else. Someone who isn’t very social, who doesn’t feel very safe in the world, someone who feels covered with a bit of a foggy, sad cloud. Someone who knows that this is not their normal, usual reality but who also can’t quite seem to do anything about it until it runs its course. It sucks.
And, what kind of results are you seeing that you attribute to CBD?
While I was a bit slow to believe the effects that the CBD was having, it is now and has for some time been undeniable. The results I am seeing are at least three-fold:
I don’t even know how to say it best...how to express my gratitude, I am tearing up as I write this - the main result that I am seeing is that I have my life back. I can plan to do things - for myself, with my partner, with my family - and not fear that the day will come and I will not feel good enough to do it. This is huge - for me, and for my family.
I have a different, more mature relationship with this part of my shadow. I know that I don’t have to experience this feeling any more. I have experienced it, moved through it, and now it is time to experience other things. I am not powerless in this. I have will in this, and in perhaps all, matters. While that may or may not be directly related to the CBD, it is work that the CBD has, in part, allowed to happen.
I am seeing, very tangibly, how I am operating more largely, more courageously, in the world. Our businesses are blossoming, we are making more music, and we are working with more people to live bigger, more vital lives.
What is your preferred form of CBD?
I prefer a whole plant concentration done with ethanol, done in a way to really get all of the medicine out of the plant that it has to offer.
How many milligrams of CBD is right for you and how do you take it?
That depends. I very often take it daily, like I take vitamin B and D. Daily, I put 15 - 25mg of our CBD Tincture in my water or juice that I drink over a few hours. Alternatively, when I or my wife see me showing early signs of depression, I take a 25mg bolus, all at once. I let it sit in my mouth for a minute or two and allow it to be absorbed sublingually before swallowing.
Have you noticed any change in tolerance / have you had to increase your dose to achieve the same effect?
I have not noticed any tolerance change so far, in the 6 months or so that I have been taking it, but I hope to continue to see the same dose having similar results. I am also very interested in collecting more data on this point.
Do you take CBD alone, or as part of a holistic cannabis treatment that includes THC?
THC is not currently my medicine. I have tried a few times over the past couple of years, and the benefits that I get from CBD seem to come from it and it alone, along with the fraction of a milligram of THC that our tincture has.
What are the three most important things you would like people to know, that you have not already shared?
First, while I have been *very* happy with the results I have seen with it, I don’t want to make it sound like CBD is a magic bullet of any sort. It is part of my overall health plan, and I am quite sure it wouldn’t be as effective for me if I wasn’t also paying attention to my diet, getting consistent exercise throughout the week, and having creative and playful time with myself, and my family and friends.
Second, If you or someone you love has something going on in their body that you think might be helped out by CBD, consider giving it a try. You really don’t have much to lose from it, and you may have much to gain. The worst thing we have seen so far is that is can simply have no effect. That’s great - it just means that you either don’t have anything that needs treatment from it, or you do and just don’t notice it yet. Either way, you are no worse off, and you may be better off.
And third, like with any medicine or health practice, you are your own best doctor in a lot of ways. If you do decide to give it a try, start slowly. Increase the dose slowly over time, and notice what is happening. Try to limit other variables that you safely can, so that you can more easily attribute the changes that you are noticing.
